Chevrolet Corvette 1968 Description
Rare Option 68’ Corvette 427 4speed convertible
1968 Corvette 427, 4 speed convertible with rare factory special order ‘No Power Steering’. This car also has NO POWER:- Brakes, Windows, Seats, Locks and doesn’t have A/C, which makes it a perfect donor for an L88.
The pictures of the car painted, are exactly how it looked before I stripped 90% it last spring.
I purchased this 1968 Corvette 427, 4 speed Convertible in 1983 and have spent a great deal of time and of course, money, on improving the look, performance and handling of this rare factory special order ‘no power steering’ Big Block, similar spec’s to the L88.
This is not a car for the meek!
Over the 34 years that I’ve owned this unique C3, I’ve rebuilt the entire car from the ground up, in some cases, two or more times and from 2000-2003 I put it on blocks and dismantled the car restoring or rebuilding from the wheels to the radiator, the interior and a new Robins convertible top w/tinted window.
Since the rebuild in 03’ the car has been driven only from Marina del Rey to Ventura County line on th PCH, on average once every 2-4 weeks. Anything the car required it got. Oil changes so frequently the oil never looked used and I always added ‘Prolong’, octane boost, lead additive, gas treatments and carb’ cleaners etc.
Stripped and painted in the late 80’s it’s been covered and garaged at all times. However, last Spring I decided to repaint the car, it still looked good from a few feet away, but close up It had a few chips and a lot of crazing on upper surfaces. I’ve removed 90% of the paint from the car to expose the almost perfect fiberglass below. Saving the buyer a lot of money and time and exposes the cars excellent condition. No guessing what’s under the paint with this car. The nose area between the headlights has a small repair and small repairs to doors, that’s it! The hard top and extra hood are still painted in blue. This is an opportunity to get a car and have it painted the color you want.
The bottom-end of the engine was built by a boat engine builder, known for building very tough bottom-ends, as boat engines run under load at all times. Balanced and Fluxed TRW pistons and connecting rods. Engle ¾ Street Strip cam, HD hydraulic Lifters and Springs,
Weiand Action Plus high rise intake manifold, Holly HP 750 mechanical D/pump carb. MSD Distributor, MSD 6AL control box (with 5,000rpm limiter), MSD Blaster Coil, MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor leads, NGK BPR7ES Cool plugs. K&N Air Filter.
Borg Warner Super T10 racing gearbox with Hurst Indy shifter, McLeod HD clutch and ‘Tom’s Differentials’ rebuilt and heat hardened 3:11 rr/end. Prop and half shafts were balanced.
Huge’ Bcool’ aluminum 3 row radiator with dual electric fans that actually keeps the engine cool, even in traffic. Heavy duty high volume water pump, thermostat, Billet aluminum recovery pot and new braided hoses. Custom under hood heads-up oil pressure and water temperature gauges.
Headman 2” ceramic coated headers, 2 1/2” 20G aluminum coated steel pipes with Flowmaster Turbo mufflers and chrome tips.
Full Rancho ‘Stage 3’ suspension with massive anti-sway bars with adjustable eccentric aircraft bearings, Bilstien shocks, Rancho front cut coils, all bushings are Neoprene, heavy duty leaf spring, adjustable HD struts, upgraded brakes with DOT5 silicone brake fluid and rebuilt steering box, master cylinder and all steering components including wheel bearings. The Trailing Arms were reinforced where the Rancho suspension attaches as it is incredibly rigid. Chrome 15”X 8” 30 spoke, chrome plated Weldwheel wheels, Front- BF Goodrich T/A Radials 265 50 15”, Rear- BF G 295 50 15” tyres. This car handles and sticks to the road as though it were on train tracks, seriously!
Interior is in very good condition, but could use a few things done, was restored in 2003. From new Foil Backed carpet underlay and gray carpets to re-upholstered seats. No cracks in the original black dashboard or console. Driver door panel has a small crack in it, passenger door panel is fine. Original ‘Astro Ventilation’ glass/seats. All interior cockpit lighting is in blue, 350 watt MTX amp, Pioneer 10 disk CD player, Corvette Edition Kenwood Digital, 1968 style Tuner/Cassette player and two 10”speaker/Horn boxes in rear compartment in gray to match the carpet, sounds amazing!
I have the blue hard top (and most parts) and original 427 hood and original/extra parts, including parts for the vacuum system disconnected or removed when rebuilding the engine, to improve horsepower and reduce weight. Consequently, both the headlight assembly and windshield wiper door do not open. All the hoses are still in place, the compressor and wiper door actuator and some related components are removed.
The Chrome was triple plated (marine grade) back in the eighties and is in remarkable condition with almost no pitting or scratches. Most of the exterior parts are in good condition, rear lights and corner marker lights atc.
All parts have been removed and labelled, bagged, color coded, boxed and cleaned.
THIS CAR IS COMPLETE AND ALMOST READY TO PAINT IN THE COLOR OF YOUR CHOICE WHICH IS WHY IT IS PRICED SO COMPETITIVELY. I HAVE OWNED IT FOR 34 YEARS BUT IT'S NOW TIME FOR ME TO MOVE ON AND THE CAR TO FIND A NEW OWNER WHO CAN MAKE IT THEIR OWN.
